TASMANIA - AN ISLAND FAR AWAY

MARILYN QUIRK'S JUST RELEASED BOOK tells the powerful stories that have defined Tasmanian migrant history. There were turbulent years in the migrants’ lives as the storm clouds of Europe after WW11 left European countries in ashes and ruin. People mourned for their lost families and children who had been sent away. Many left behind European war-torn cities, captures and escapes, forced marches, work camps and underground dangers.   For some there was no turning back.

Nine nationalities are represented here and included is one Polish soldier’s story of fighting in the desert side-by-side with the Australians at Tobruk.

The author’s detective work produces some interesting facts about the island and its people. Letters, documents, and interviews, and in some cases, unusual research, have been used.  Some of the material has not surfaced before.

Many of these migrants endured appalling trials to call Tasmania home and this book records their place in Tasmanian history.

The previous work by Marilyn Quirk is Echoes on the Mountain. This is a timely account of the stories of lives lived in an alien place - of people working on contract for the Hydro Electric Commission in the Tasmanian Central Highlands. Far from their European homes, families and countries devastated by WWII, ten of the migrants who populated this isolated place tell their stories and recount their remarkable experiences.

  • Webster, Eileen   ( 1 Article )

Eileen Webster's self-published Grass Roots, gives an often humorous view of life in England during WWII. After the war, the author went on to become a WREN, in the 1950s.

Crossroads, is an hilarious account of the pitfalls an unwary traveller can befall. This author as a traveller certainly found her share of pitfalls to tumble in to.
